 Pantanal South - Bonito

The city of Bonito is located on the southwestern corner of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul and can be visited any time of the year. But experienced travelers advise: the ideal time is between December and March – the rainy season. During that season, local vegetation is green, animals come out from their hides – since there is plenty of food to be taken, rivers’ water levels are high and waterfalls are gorgeous. Between May and August local fields are dry, there is constant burning for pasture and local fauna runs away looking for better hides.

The best way of appreciating local natural beauties is by going on an adventure tourism tour. The most indicated activities include diving in caverns, observing the underwater fauna and walking along trails in the forest. There are a great number of grouts with underground, deep lagoons into which experienced divers may risk to explore. Some agencies offer dives going no deeper than 20 meters without risks for amateur divers, in the Mimoso Grout. But pay attention, espeleo-diving is indicated only to those who have great experience and an adequate equipment.

The Pantanal is roughly divided into two parts: The South and North. Each “Pantanal” – North and South – has its own natural features, activities and ideal period for visitation. The Pantanal South Gateway is Campo Grande, the capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. It is not the place you are probably heading to. Apart some interesting agricultural aspects it doesn't offer turistical attractions (it is seen as the tropical version of the North American corn belt). Mato Grosso do Sul is also cultivating soya, wheat and cotton plantations and is one of Brazil's main producers. It is also one of the country's main rearers of beef cattle, pigs and poultry. You might stay there fo the night in order to bring your flight schedule in agreement.

The state includes two thirds of the Pantanal (marshlands) which is the largest flooded area in the world, inhabited by an infinite variety of creatures, and Bonito, a city surrounded by aquaria of crystal waters and a large number of grottoes and caverns in an almost perfect state of conservation.
